Blotto - "I Wanna Be A Lifeguard"

It's officially summer so what better way to kick it off than with a classic new wave beach song. Blotto spent two years honing their chops playing the clubs in Albany, New York, then raised enough money to produce a four-song ep which this song comes from. It seemed that anytime The B52's "Rock Lobster" was played in a club in 1980 it was followed by Blotto's "I Wanna Be A Lifeguard". You can read all about Blotto's history here and download more music too. Taking a cue from The Ramones, Blotto was vocalist Sarge Blotto, bassist Cheese Blotto, guitarist Broadway Blotto, guitar-vocalist Bowtie Blotto, and drummer Lee Harvey Blotto. Female lead singer Blanche Blotto joined the band for a while, then quit, being replaced by Chevrolet Blotto.

At the end of the song, he switches "white stuff on my nose" to "white stuff in my nose," right?

I think my favorite line is (paraphrased) the one where he rhymes "checking out blonde girls' tan lines" with "busting more moves than Allied Van Lines!"

Nice one, anyways...

Saw these guys many, many times in the early '80's. Pretty much everytime they came through Buffalo, NY, I was there. A great band and lots of fun to see live. Still have my two Blotto EP's. They should have been big stars, but, oh well.

Another Fun "Parody" song from their EP was "We are the Now-tones".
I do believe that Blotto eventually made it onto a major label, with "I wanna be a lifeguard", either directly or thru a compilation LP, or movie soundtrack.

Sirius Sat. Radio's "First Wave" channel 22 has been playing "I Wanna be a Lifeguard" recently (twice in the past two days). However, my wife and I both remember it sounding much different when we heard it way back when on MTV. The version they play on the radio, which I assume is the album version, sounds much more "Beachboys parody" and slower than the one on the MTV video. I would think I was just remembering wrong, but my wife said the same thing when she heard it. Anybody else remember it sounding different? Were there two versions?

Turns out that http://www.blotto.net/ has some info that the "canadalife.mp3" above is the "new, slightly different version of their biggest hit" -- this apparently is the version Sirius has, too. I'd love to hear the original version if anyone has it!

Ah! I was just being lazy and used the link from Blotto's site instead of ripping my own from the original and then hosting it. If your interested in getting the original, email me from a yahoo, gmail or other account that allows large files and I'll rip it and email it too you.

I looking for some songs that I remember from 1982. Some lyrics include "We are the Now-tones. We play top 40." and "Downtown. Baby, I'll meet you there, if I can do my hair." Is this the band I'm looking for. Where can I get these songs.

I was doing a search for Blotto "I wanna be a lifeguard" and I came across this.

I just saw them Saturday night in Scotia NY! They're 'local guys'. Sarge works for www.timesunion.com.

They're a great group of guys and according to my boyfriend who has been a blotto fan for 25 years, they still have it after all of these years.

I see Broadway playing with a band on Long Island called the Seamonkeys. They will play I want to be a Lifegaurd if you ask Broadway.
