New York, NY's, The Now were caught in the New Wave rush in 1979. They were playing the Max's Kansas City scene when they signed to Midsong International Records and hooked up with producer de jour Bobby Orlando. An album was "produced, arranged, engineered and concieved" by Mr. Orlando and sold about 200,000 records - enough to warrant a second LP which the band started to record. Then the label literally disappeared from their New York City offices. The band never received a dime and that was the end of The Now. The band splintered off into various bands but none achieved any level of success.

ReplyDeleteOne of my fave bands of the era was the Stiphnoyds, of Seattle, whose 7" single from 1979 'Afraid of the Russians' changes hands for up to $100. Someone gave me a copy in the mid 80's. No idea how it found its way to Pudsey, West Yorkshire, but there you go.

Hey - Great post! I bought this cool release on vinyl & cassette from the Jamesway department store bargain bin, right about 1979/80. Geez, was it a direct-to-cut-out-bin album?? Anyway, the platter is better than you'd think. "T. V. Private Eye" is a cool inversion of "Watching the Detectives." A bit of fun from the New Wave era. Thanks for providing info on this obscure band!!

ReplyDeleteHey, I was in "The Now". If someone lets me know how to upload additional songs, I'd post some of the better ones, "Can You Fix Me Up With Her" is total "bubble gum" pop wave. The upside to "Can You" is this song received the most air play in it's day.
ReplyDeleteAs mentioned, there was a live recording (unofficially released) and what's not mentioned is that we did record a complete second album in just one evening "Bad Publicity Is Better Than No Publicity", we were going to mix the record a couple of weeks later when the record company strangely disappeared basically overnight. So it goes in the music world!
Oh, and that's correct - none of the band members made a penny - Gotta love it!

ReplyDeleteIt's a great shame. I only came across this blog through Googling for a Brains song, 'Tanya', just to check the spelling, and finding that entry from 2005. Now I see, in March 2010, that this last entry is from nearly three years ago. You can't help but think, has the blogger come to grief at the beaks and talons of feral chickens? Let's hope not...
ReplyDeleteHave The As been covered yet? I have two copies of their eponymous album from the early 80s, and it's cracking stuff. Produced by, IIRC, Rick Chertoff, and owing much to Elvis Costello. As with The Brains, it seems to be easier to find out stuff about them, just Google 'The As Artificial Love'.
I guess if the blogger has gone away, and he/she needs to approve comments, no one will ever see this? So the question is, did I ever write it..?

It's a shame, but I was going to all the trouble of writing a new response saying 'yay!', and suggesting some bands that might be included, then I closed down the computer without saving or sending it. Still, for all I know The A's aren't regarded as a 'lost' band, and Timothy Truman And The Dixie Pistols definitely aren't New Wave.

ReplyDeleteThe Now actually sold over 300,000 LP's in the USA. Many more in Canada on the RCA label and more in Japan which had a big following. Bobby Orlando recently released a new Digital version on CD of the album... It's too bad MTV was not around at their time - they just missed the boat.
